The sun shone, children played and the delicious smell of newly cooked food emanated from the Market Place in Melksham on the 3rd May at the start of the first Melksham Food and Drink Festival.
The Festival roared into life with a fabulous Festival Food Fair which took over the Market Place and the grounds of Melksham House. Nearly two dozen food stands gave visitors and locals alike the chance to taste a wide variety of foods from pork and bacon to springbok and kangaroo, cheese and honey to crepes and Thai cuisine, as well as local beers and wines.
At the same time in Melksham’s Assembly Hall, Celebrity Chef Martin Blunos and Bistro and Cookery School Patron Peter Vaughan could be found demonstrating some great dishes all made with local food, some of which was sponsored by local suppliers Lovejoys and Church Farm Meats.
Students from the George Ward School found themselves in the kitchen under the guidance of Martin making carrot soup, which was later sold in the ArtHouse Café at lunch time. Before his demonstrations, Martin Blunos then went on stage to present the prizes for the ‘Day in the Life of a Carrot’, a competition which had been organised in conjunction with local fruiterers Lovejoys. Owner Neil Mortimer explained to the audience that the children from several local schools had written story boards and painted pictures and as part of their prizes, each of the winners was given a bunch of new carrots! Pictures were on display at the ArtHouse Café throughout the week.

The Market Place also saw the running of the first Milk Churn Race and although there were only a small number of entries for this inaugural race, fun was had by all!
Other events continued throughout the week, in various venues and restaurants in the area and the Assembly Hall again played host to several food demonstrations from Cake Icing to Thai Cookery. And even the local Scouts doing a cook off with Peter Vaughan at the Melksham Scout hut.
